Growing data protection challenges for local governments require cooperation with the Polish SA

Cybersecurity, the application of artificial intelligence, urban monitoring, the use of modern technology in public transportation or the creation of codes of conduct are just some of the areas of possible cooperation between local governments and the Personal Data Protection Office.

These and other matters were the subject of a meeting between Konrad Komornicki, the Deputy President of the Personal Data Protection Office , as well as representatives of the DPA and representatives of the Paweł Adamowicz Union of Polish Metropolises (UMP) and data protection officers representing UMP member cities, which took place on June 24, 2024.

The UMP representatives introduced the data protection challenges they face every day, and presented plans to apply various plans to local governments, and citizens.
The challenges that local government units must face in the near future such us, cyber threats and the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions were discussed.

"With the smart city concept, which aims to improve the quality of life of citizens  with the implementation of inter alia,modern technologies that make use of a range of data, it is essential not to lose sight of the right to privacy and the protection of citizens personal data," said Konrad Komornicki, Deputy President of the Personal Data Protection Office. He also encouraged the UMP to take steps to begin work on a code of conduct dedicated to local government units, particularly when it comes to large urban centers. For their personal data processing problems are of a completely different nature than in smaller cities.

Moreover, discussions included the role of local governments employees trainings  on data protection and the need for security audits and tests, as well as systematic reviews and updates of security policies in local government units.

The event was the first in a series of meetings between the Personal Data Protection Office and representatives of local government organisations.
