19th Data Protection Day - working together for an informed digital society
28 January 2024 marks the 19th Data Protection Day, established by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on the anniversary of the adoption of the Council of Europe Convention No. 108 - the first piece of legislation regulating the protection of personal data. It is a special day that reminds us of the crucial role of privacy protection and data security in the rapidly evolving world of new technologies.
The celebration of the Data Protection Day is a special opportunity to reflect on the challenges of data protection in the digital age and to promote awareness of everyone's rights and obligations in this regard.
The role of the ‘Your Data - Your Concern’ programme
The educational programme ‘’Your Data - Your Concern‘’ plays an extremely important role in shaping students‘ and teachers’ awareness of personal data protection. As part of the celebrations, schools and teacher training centres undertake numerous educational activities, including lessons, meetings with experts, assemblies, workshops, debates, competitions - which introduce young people to the principles of safe use of the Internet and modern technologies.
In his letter addressed to the participants of this year's Programme, the President of the Personal Data Protection Office, Mirosław Wróblewski, emphasises the importance of joint activities for the protection of personal data:
‘The main objective of the “Your Data - Your Concern” programme is to inspire not only students, but entire school and local communities to take action to protect privacy through the implementation of interesting initiatives in which young people actively participate, gaining useful knowledge and shaping good practices in this field.’
The President of the Polish SA also expressed his appreciation for the commitment of principals, teachers, parents and students to the objectives of the Programme:
‘I am delighted that your School is supporting children and young people to become informed individuals, setting an example for respecting our personal data.’
Building an informed digital society
The celebration of the Data Protection Day provides an excellent opportunity to promote the informed and responsible use of technology. Education in this area is crucial, especially in the context of the increasing challenges posed by technological advances.
The Personal Data Protection Office encourages the organisation of educational activities that will sensitise young people and adults to the need to protect data and privacy. Through joint digital education efforts, we can build a society that understands the importance of data protection and is able to consciously exercise its rights.
